How a Young Woman Lost Her Identity

The New Yorker’s Rachel Aviv reports on the disappearance of Hannah Upp, a teacher who suffers from a rare form of amnesia. Upp’s mother and father were both pastors of divergent theologies and she herself experimented with different religions, from Quakerism to the Baha’i faith. Upp often had difficulty reconciling her faith with what she perceived to be cruelty. Aviv writes, “Her friend Piyali Bhattacharya, who was raised Hindu, once asked Hannah, ‘Do you think I’m going to Hell?’ She said that Hannah began crying.”
