Gay Marriage’s Legal Crusader
posted on March 25, 2013Tablet‘s Allison Hoffman writes on this week’s Supreme Court hearings in which lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, “will be fighting for federal government recognition not only of Windsor’s marriage to another woman, but of her own.” Kaplan will represent widow Edith Windsor in a case that challenges the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act. “Kaplan,” writes Hoffman, “is one of a handful of attorneys who over the past decade have decisively shaped and driven the legal fight for same-sex marriage nationally.” Kaplan herself is a devout Jew whose own marriage to her wife was performed by rabbi Jan Uhrbach at the Conservative Synagogue of the Hamptons.
