Gay Groups Pull Support for Anti-Discrimination Bill Over Religious Exemption
posted on July 10, 2014Religion News Service’s Heather Adams reports that the ACLU and four gay rights groups have ended their support for the current version of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), after the Supreme Court’s ruling last week expanded the potential for for-profit corporations to claim religious exemptions to federal laws. ENDA would ban employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. According to Laura W. Murphy, director of the ACLU’s Washington legislative office, “Federal legislation to protect LGBT people from workplace discrimination is way beyond overdue, but Congress has no place giving religious affiliated employees a license to discriminate against LGBT workers.”
