The Economist discusses congressional debates around the America’s International Religious Freedom Act and the creation of a special envoy to religious minorities in the Middle East. Although the bill, championed by Rep. Frank Wolf, was struck down in the Senate in 2011, advocates believe the bill has a much better chance of succeeding amidst the recent bombing of a Christian church in Peshawar. “The administration may argue, as before, that its religious freedom-watching machinery is adequately strong already; as a co-creator of that machinery Mr Wolf believes that the State Department is not doing or saying nearly enough.”
