From Dachau to Durham, NC, Holocaust Survivors’ Ashes Find Fitting Burial

posted on May 28, 2014

Yonat Shimron reports for Religion News Service on the internment in Durham, NC of ashes from the crematorium at Dachau concentration camp. The ashes were given to North Carolina soldier David Walter Corsbie Jr. during a tour of the concentration camp after its liberation in 1945. The ceremony, held Sunday, was “an opportunity to honor a World War II serviceman and bring together a handful of Holocaust survivors living in the region,” Shimron writes. The soldier’s son, Joseph Corsbie, initiated the burial out of concern for the fate of the ashes he’d inherited. “My dad was horrified by what he saw,” Corsbie said. “All he could do was shake and cry when he told me about it.”
