Faith Offers Valuable Connection for Southern Dems

The Associated Press’s Christina A. Cassidy reports on southern Democrats’ use of religion as a method of connecting with voters. In a part of the country that is deeply religious—and, in recent years, deeply Republican—Democrats such as Georgia senatorial candidate Michelle Nun and Georgia gubernatorial candidate Jason Carter are talking about the role of faith in their lives. Andrea Gillespie, professor of political science at Emory University, said, “If you have a Democrat who can make credible claims of faith that might actually help to undermine support for the Republican candidate at least on the issue of, ‘Does this person share my values?’”
