Evangelicals’ Support of Trump Shouldn’t Come as a Surprise
posted on March 4, 2016In an op-ed for The Los Angeles Times, Randall Balmer, a professor of religion at Dartmouth, writes that it should come as no surprise to pundits that evangelicals are now supporting Donald Trump – “a twice-divorced, thrice-married billionaire famous for firing people on TV, who belittles the disabled and advocates policies — on immigration, for example, or the environment — utterly at odds with the ‘biblical values’ evangelicals purport to uphold.” Balmer argues that this development is the natural progression of white evangelicals’ secularization and alignment with the Republican Party.
