Election Turmoil Splits West Virginia City’s Evangelicals

posted on February 10, 2021

Luis Andres Henao and Jessie Wardarski of the Associated Press report that the evangelical Christians of Bluefield, West Virginia, are split over politics. They profile three churches in the small community: Father’s House International Church, where the pastor has supported President Trump’s false claims of a stolen election; Faith Center Church, where the pastor has criticized such fiery and false political rhetoric; and the Crossroads Church, where the pastor struggles to seek Christian unity in this moment. “The three churches have much in common,” Henao and Wardarski write. “All of them condemn the desecration of the Capitol and pray for a way to find common ground. But they diverge on a central issue: What is the role of evangelical Christianity in America’s divisive politics?”
