Dozens, as many as 100, Killed in Nigeria Church Collapse
posted on December 12, 2016For Religion News Service, Tife Owolabi of Reuters reports, “At least 100 people were killed by the collapse of a church in southeastern Nigeria, said a resident and photojournalist who visited a local morgue. But officials put the death toll at just 27.” On Saturday, the Reigners Bible church’s roof collapsed as worshippers and government officials watched a pastor get consecrated as bishop. Owolabi writes, “State governor Udom Emmanuel, who escaped unhurt from the church service, ordered the arrest of the building contractor, state news agency NAN said.” Owolabi points out that Nigerian officials are often criticized for understating the death toll of accidents and terrorist attacks.
