Discreet Papal Campaign Began Before Pope Benedict’s Resignation Shock

Behind closed doors, cardinals hoping to be appointed the next Pope have been planning for Benedict’s resignation for the last two years, reports Tom Heneghan of Reuters. Heneghan looks at the intricacies and subtle maneuvers of the “pope sweepstakes,” a campaign that “is the polar opposite of a modern U.S.-style political campaign.” Caroline Pigozzi, author of The Indiscreet Vatican, wrote, “Paradoxically, one must not appear in the papers and certainly not be photographed. A man of the Church is not a star and must always remember the saying ‘whoever enters the conclave a pope comes out a cardinal.’”
