Democrats Push Bill to Reverse Supreme Court Ruling on Contraceptives

posted on July 10, 2014

In The New York Times, Robert Pear reports on Democrats’ efforts to develop legislation designed to reverse last week’s Supreme Court ruling that allows some for-profit corporations to claim a religious objection to providing contraceptive coverage to the employees. The bill, written by Senators Patty Murray and Mark Udall, would make it illegal for employers to “deny coverage of a specific health care item or service” required under federal law but would preserve exemptions for churches, houses of worship, and nonprofit religious organizations. Representative Diana DeGette, one of the authors of the House of Representative’s version of the bill, said, “Our main concern is making sure that women are not denied contraceptives while we sit around trying to figure out what to do. The bill is an interim solution, to make sure women can get birth control while we look at broader issues, including the Religious Freedom Restoration Act.”
