Deep in the Desert, A Case Pits Immigration Crackdown Against Religious Freedom

NPR’s Ryan Lucas writes about the case of Scott Warren, a university lecturer and activist who is using the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) to defend himself against charges of harboring and transporting undocumented immigrants in Arizona. The case puts at odds two goals of the Trump administration: border restriction and religious freedom. Lucas writes, “At a court hearing in May, Warren testified about his beliefs. He described a life force that permeates all things – animate and inanimate. And his faith, he said, compels him to act when someone is in need.”
