Controversial Cleric Stirs Protests upon Return to Pakistan

Jackie Northam of NPR examines the return of Dr. Tahir-ul-Qadri, a Muslim cleric from Canada, to Pakistan. The controversial leader has rallied massive protests in Islamabad against the Pakistani government, which he believes to be corrupt and unjust. However, some analysts believe Qadri himself to be corrupt. Northam reports, “Many people do question Qadri’s motives. There’s widespread speculation that he’s working with the military to manipulate upcoming elections, but there’s no proof. Qadri himself can’t run for office because he now holds Canadian citizenship.”
