Church of England General Synod Backs Women Bishops

The BBC reports that the Church of England’s General Synod voted on Monday to allow the ordination of female bishops. The legislation, which had narrowly failed to draw the required two-thirds majority in the House of Laity in 2012 in spite of passing the House of Bishops and House of Clergy, easily garnered enough votes this time in all three groups. The vote, which Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg hailed on Twitter as a “big moment” for the Church of England, could allow for the appointment of women bishops by the end of the year.
