Catholics and Jews: The Great Change

posted on March 11, 2013

For The New York Review of Books, Gary Wills considers John Connelly’s book on the shifting attitudes of Catholics towards Judaism: From Enemy to Brother: The Revolution in Catholic Teaching on the Jews, 1933-1965. Connelly’s work investigates how Catholicism was able to partly shed its deeply ingrained history of anti-Semitism. Wills notes, “Connelly’s book, though its treatment of the council is not as good as that of others, is invaluable for its close tracking of the development of the Pauline argument for the continuing validity of the Jewish Covenant.”
