As Pride Club Takes on Yeshiva University, LGBTQ Student Groups at Other Religious Colleges Take Notice

posted on September 29, 2022

Louis Keene of The Forward reports that LGBTQ students, alumni, and faculty at religious universities around the country who say they have been discriminated against are pursuing legal recourse. Many have filed suits in federal courts, like the Pride Alliance at Yeshiva University, which has taken their case all the way to the Supreme Court in recent weeks. David Shill, who runs the Cougar Pride Center at Brigham Young University, said, “It’s hard for people who haven’t been through it to really understand how crushing a homophobic action can be from a university and how othering and how clearly they put you in this box. They remind you that you’re a minority, that your identity is against God. I think for people who haven’t been through that, it’s just really hard — you feel so small.”
