Angela Merkel Calls for Ban on Full-Face Veils in Germany
posted on December 7, 2016The New York Times’ Alison Smale reports that German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced her support of banning full-face veils on Tuesday. Merkel said that “a fully veiled woman scarcely has a chance at full integration in Germany.” With the announcement, Merkel acknowledged the importance of equal treatment and acceptance. Smale writes, “Ms. Merkel tried a tricky balancing act between holding fast to Western values and tilting farther right to avoid being outflanked by populist challengers.”
