Analysis: At Supreme Court Hearing, Passions Over Religion and its Rules

Joan Biskupic of Reuters writes that the Greece v. Galloway case “produced an unusually testy oral-argument session on Wednesday that recalled the decades of difficulty Supreme Court justices have had drawing the line between church and state.” Douglas Laycock, a lawyer representing the challengers to the town’s prayer sessions, argued the practice forces people to join Christian invocations but said he has no issue with nondenominational prayer. However, Justice Samuel Alito pressed him, “Give me an example of a prayer that would be acceptable to Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus. … Give me an example.”
