posted on October 4, 2022

Bobby Caina Calvan and Mike Schneider of the Associated Press report that Jews in southern Florida are determined to observe Yom Kippur, the Jewish holiday dedicated to repentance, in the wake of Hurricane Ian. Some synagogues have moved services online while others have set up community meals for their congregants and other local residents to come together before the holiday. Robin Dermer, the wife of a local Rabbi, said, “Yom Kippur is about the fragility of life. If anything, we have seen with Ian how precarious life is. The meaning of Yom Kippur, of renewal and connection to God, will be deeper, not lessened.”
