American Catholicism is at Crossroads

At The Washington Post, Marc Fisher examines the impact Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation will have on American Catholicism. As the influence of the church dwindles, Americans are left wondering “whether Catholicism will grow smaller but hew to traditional doctrine or follow its members as they adapt to a fast-changing society.” Amongst the recent sex abuse scandals, and its “hard-line stands” on contemporary issues, Fisher writes, American Catholicism seems to be “growing more polarized in faith, just as the nation has divided itself politically and socially.”
