Al-Qaeda Franchise in Yemen Exploits Chaos to Rebuild, Officials Say

In The Washington Post, Greg Miller reports that a power vacuum in Yemen created by the recent exit of U.S. personnel has allowed al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) to replenish their ranks and regroup, according to U.S. military intelligence. Officials insist that they have not stopped tracking AQAP, Miller writes, but “the counterterrorism fight has gone from the most active battlefront in Yemen to a secondary conflict, swallowed up by a civil war that is serving as a proxy for a broader regional struggle between Saudi Arabia and Iran.”
