Abortion Stirs Little Debate in Israel

Ben Sales of The Jewish Daily Forward reports that the contentious issue of abortion in the United States, causes little debate in Israel as even pro-life groups admit a woman’s right to choose. Although religious issues dominate the Israeli political landscape, the nation has some of the most liberal abortion laws in the world. “Traditional Jewish law doesn’t regard life as beginning at conception,” Sales writes, “and even mandates abortion if a mother’s life is in danger, so opposing abortion isn’t as high a priority for Israeli religious activists as it is for some of their American counterparts.”
