A Rabbi’s Enduring Sermon on Living Your Last Five Minutes

The New York Times’ Samuel G. Freedman writes on Rabbi Kenneth Berger’s life, death, and his renowned Yom Kippur sermon, “Five Minutes to Live.” In the sermon, Berger told the story of the crew members of the doomed Challenger Space Shuttle. Nearly three years later, Berger perished in a plane crash, giving his meditation new resonance. Freedman writes, “Both the sermon’s theme and its presentiment of the rabbi’s death resonate with the theological essence of the High Holy Days.”
