A Mix of Hope and Dismay as Religious Leaders Assess Biden

David Crary and Elana Schor of the Associated Press present preliminary responses from American religious leaders to the new Biden administration. From abortion to LGBTQ rights, religious freedom to immigration, Crary and Schor report that Biden’s agenda has “stirred new hopes among many religious leaders in the United States, while causing dismay among others.” Not surprisingly, theologically conservative leaders are concerned about abortion and religious freedom, among other issues. But Francis DeBernardo, who advocates for LGBTQ Catholics with New Ways Ministry, said of the Catholic president: “As a person deeply committed to his church, he is not likely to trample on the religious liberties of faith institutions.”
