Jennifer Pinckney Describes Moments of Terror Inside Emanuel AME Church

The Post and Courier‘s Glenn Smith, Jennifer Berry Hawes and Abigail Darlington report from the sentencing phase of Dylann Roof’s federal trial in Charleston. He was found guilty last month and faces the death penalty for killing nine people at Emanuel AME Church. Witness Jennifer Pinckney, the widow of slain pastor Clementa Pickney, described hiding in the church office with her daughter as gunfire rang out. Smith, Hawes, and Darlington write, “Pinckney’s words carried a chilling weight following a prosecutor’s revelation that Roof had penned a jailhouse manifesto six weeks after his arrest, saying he had ‘no regret’ for the killings and hadn’t shed a tear for his victims.” Roof, who is representing himself, told jurors that he had no mental health issues. “There is nothing wrong with me,” he said.
