Evangelical Christian Israel Backers Push Opposition to Chuck Hagel
posted on January 31, 2013Despite winning support from Jewish Democratic leaders, Chuck Hagel still faces opposition from evangelical Christians and conservative pro-Israel groups, reports The Forward. Christians United for Israel (CUFI), a Texas-based group founded by Pastor John Hagee, is leading the charge against Hagel with advertisements and rallies. On Monday, Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), who has connections to CUFI, said, “I cannot support a nominee for defense secretary who suggests we should be tougher on Israel and more lenient on Iran.”
