The U.S. Puts “Moderate” Restrictions on Religious Freedom

posted on January 28, 2014

Emma Green of The Atlantic reports that the United States puts “moderate” restrictions on religious freedom, with harsher regulations than countries such as Serbia and Haiti, according to Pew’s Research Center’s Religion and Public Life Project. However, lead researcher Brian Grim explained that a moderate ranking is not necessarily bad. Low government restriction scores “could point to the fact that there aren’t a whole lot of mechanisms in place to regulate anything in society,” Grim says. “In some places, there just aren’t government policies—the government isn’t active.”
