Muslim Refugees Were Admitted at a Lower Rate During Trump’s Refugee Ban

posted on February 27, 2017

At The New York Times, Audrey Carlsen, K.K. Rebecca Lai, and Adam Pearce report that only 15 percent of 843 total refugees who were admitted during the week of the Trump administration’s travel ban were Muslim. Forty-five percent of all refugees who were admitted in 2016 were Muslim, on average. President Trump set a 50,000 refugee limit for 2017 in late January. Carlsen, Lai, and Pearce write, “Under this new limit and without a refugee ban, the United States is on target to hit its cap on refugee admissions by mid-April, leaving almost six months when no refugees would be allowed into the country.”
