Cardinal Mahony Says Vatican Told Him to Attend Conclave
posted on March 5, 2013Catholic News Service’s Francis X. Rocca reports that Cardinal Roger M. Mahony said “the Vatican, acting through its ambassador to the United States, had instructed him to take part in the election of the next pope.” Mahony has been accused of mishandling sex abuse cases and was urged by advocates for sex-abuse victims to withdraw from the papal conclave. On his decision to participate, Mahony told Rocca, “I’m here because the Holy Father appointed me a cardinal in 1991, and the primary job of a cardinal, the number one job, is actually the election of a new pope should a vacancy occur.”
