75 Years After Being Freed from Auschwitz, He Can’t Stop Going Back
posted on January 29, 2020The Los Angeles Times’s Jaweed Kaleem reports that 94-year-old Holocaust survivor Ralph Hakman recently commemorated 75 years since his liberation from Auschwitz-Birkenau with a visit to the infamous site. Though Hakman now lives in Beverly Hills, he returned to his native Poland on Monday, marking his fourth visit to the camp in which he spent three years of his life. Hakman is one of the few remaining survivors of the camp. Kaleem writes, “Nearly every survivor Hakman has known is dead. So are some of their children.” Hakman plans to make his fifth visit this spring. “I would be guilty not to go,” he said. “What if I see someone I know? What if these are my last chances?”
