At Drab Philadelphia Jail, Anxious Times Precede Papal Visit

Reuters’ Laila Kearney reports that inmates at Curran Fromhold Correctional Facility in Philadelphia are preparing for September, when Pope Francis will visit the jail as part of his first tour of the United States. “The pope’s stop at the Philadelphia facility will be the latest in a series of prison visits by Francis, an outspoken opponent of the death penalty and lengthy prison terms,” Kearney writes. His visit comes at a time when both Congress and President Obama are considering revisions to criminal sentencing policies.
