Pentagon Moves Closer to Allowing Transgender Troops to Serve

USA Today’s Ray Locker and Tom Vanden Brook report that Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced Monday that the Pentagon would begin studying the effects that allowing transgender persons to serve openly in the military may have on military effectiveness and policy. The working group “will start with the presumption that transgender persons can serve openly without any adverse impact on military effectiveness and readiness, unless and except where objective practical impediments are identified,” Carter said. “I don’t think anything but their suitability for service should preclude them.”
