Hope College and Belmont to Offer Benefits to Same-Sex Spouses

Christianity Today’s Sarah Zylstra, Morgan Lee, and Bob Smietana report that Hope College in Michigan and Belmont University in Tennessee, both Christian schools, are extending benefits to same-sex spouses of employees, following the Supreme Court’s legalization of same-sex marriage. “In employment policy and practice, Hope College has always followed the state’s legal definition of marriage,” Hope College president John Knapp wrote to the college community, echoing the sentiments of Belmont University counsel Jason Rogers. “Spouses are eligible for benefits, so long as their marriage is legally recognized by the State of Michigan.”
