Honoring the Roots, Celebrating the Blossoms on International Day of Yoga

At The Huffington Post, Paul Brandeis Raushenbush writes on the first International Day of Yoga, which was June 21. The commemoration was held in part to increase awareness of yoga’s religious and cultural context, but the event was not without controversy, Rausehenbush notes. India’s Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the idea, leading to concerns from India’s religious minorities, and there has been debate over “the question of who ‘owns’ yoga.”
