How Did Abu Zubaydah Lose His Eye?

In The New Yorker, Dexter Filkins explores the fate of Abu Zubaydah, who was arrested by the C.I.A. in 2002 on suspicion of belonging to Al Qaeda and was later tortured. A photo taken moments after Abu Zubaydah’s capture shows him with two working eyes, while a photo released by WikiLeaks in 2006 shows him with an eyepatch. “That is, sometime between when he entered exclusive C.I.A. custody, in 2002, and when he left it, in 2006, he lost his left eye,” Filkins writes.
