In The Salt Lake Tribune, Peggy Fletcher Stack writes, “Mormonism’s oldest apostle, L. Tom Perry, whose unassuming demeanor and optimistic enthusiasm inspired generations of Latter-day Saints, died Saturday about 3 p.m. at his Salt Lake City home.” Known as a community leader and a champion of the traditional family, Perry nonetheless stood with gay rights advocates several months ago as the Utah legislature passed a bill simultaneously protecting LGBT rights and religious freedom, Fletcher Stack reports. With Perry’s death, a vacancy opens up in the LDS Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, one of the faith’s ruling councils.
