Inside the Fight Over Obama’s Terror Summit

At Foreign Policy, John Hudson writes, “This week, senior dignitaries from 60 nations are descending on Washington for President Barack Obama’s long-postponed summit on countering violent extremism: a massive three-day spectacle of law enforcement officers, diplomats, faith leaders, educators, and entrepreneurs talking about ways to neutralize the root causes of terrorism.” The summit, which began on Tuesday and focuses on Islamic extremism, comes during a period of change in U.S. counterterrorism strategy, Hudson reports. Criticized as inefficient and unwieldy and subject to political infighting, the summit may nonetheless yield initiatives for the United Nations General Assembly this September.
