Religious Bias Issues Debated After Atlanta Mayor’s Dismissal of Fire Chief

Richard Fausset of The New York Times reports on Atlanta’s Mayor Kasim Reed’s dismissal of Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran for distributing copies of his self-help book, which harshly condemns homosexuality. Fausset writes, “Mr. Reed said that the chief failed to follow proper protocol in receiving approvals from city officials to publish his book, a claim that Mr. Cochran disputes. Mr. Reed also said that Mr. Cochran opened the city to possible discrimination lawsuits.” Religious conservatives objected, citing free speech, and conservative legal firm Alliance Defending Freedom is now defending Reed.
