1 in 3 Americans Want a Divorce Between Clergy and Civil Marriages

Religion News Service’s Cathy Lynn Grossman discusses the popular support for a split between clergy and civil marriage. A survey by LifeWay Research found that nearly half of the 2,000 American adults who responded believe, “Religious weddings should not be connected to the state’s definition and recognition of marriage.” Ed Stetzer, executive director of LifeWay Research, said in a press release, “Christians tend to see marriage as a sacred covenant … Many others see marriage as a contract that ties the couple together in the eyes of the state.”
