Feds Drop Sami Al-Arian Prosecution

At POLITICO, Josh Gerstein reports that federal prosecutors have dropped the 2008 indictment of criminal contempt against former University of South Florida engineering professor Sami Al-Arian. “Over the years, Al-Arian’s case has repeatedly become a political hot potato,” Gerstein writes, cited by many politicians as evidence of either political persecution or lax enforcement policies for terrorism. The case started in the 1990s under suspicions that the professor held ties with Palestinian Islamic Jihad and continued when Al-Arian refused to testify against Muslim groups with alleged terrorist links.
