Supreme Court Sides with Hobby Lobby on Contraception Mandate

At POLITICO, Jennifer Haberkorn and Josh Gerstein report on this morning’s Supreme Court ruling in Burwell v. Hobby Lobby. The Court ruled that closely-held, for-profit corporations cannot be forced to provide contraceptive coverage for their employees in their insurance plans. Writing for the majority, which also included Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas, and Anthony Kennedy, Justice Samuel Alito said, “Under the standard that [the Religious Freedom Restoration Act] prescribes, the HHS contraception mandate is unlawful.” In a dissent joined by Justices Stephen Breyer, Elena Kagan, and Sonia Sotomayor, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg decried the “startling breadth” of the majority opinion.
