Barney Frank: Why I Didn’t Talk about My Atheism While Serving in Congress

Chris Stedman shares his conversation with former Congressman Barney Frank on LGBT rights, humanism, and atheism in politics at Religion News Service. Frank, who was the first openly gay member of Congress, only revealed his atheism last year. He was presented with the Humanist of the Year award over the weekend. “I’ve long been aware of prejudice against gay and lesbian people, and I have been very sensitive to that,” Frank said. “I guess I never thought about the extent to which people who want to be explicit about their nontheism and their Humanism have felt somewhat devalued—so I’m glad to be of service.”
