Hail Dayton

In Oxford American Rachael Maddux reports on the continuing legacy of the 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial in Dayton, Tennessee. While the trial—and, perhaps more importantly, Inherit the Wind, the 1955 dramatization of those events—has resulted in Dayton functioning as “both punch line and punching bag, especially in recent years,” the town has worked to memorialize and celebrate the trial. Through a trip to last year’s 25th Scopes Trial Play & Festival, Maddux looks at how the 90-year-old trial still affects Dayton today.
