Pakistan: Worse Than We Knew

Ahmed Rashid for the New York Review of Books assesses reporter Carlotta Gall’s The Wrong Enemy: America in Afghanistan, 2001-2014. Gall claims that the Pakistani military is the real enemy of the conflict, “driving the violence in Afghanistan for its own cynical, hegemonic reasons.” Rashid’s own inquiries, he says, reveal “large gaps in Gall’s analysis that cannot be ignored,” but he agrees that the Pakistani military’s involvement exacerbated the extremism that “will ultimately become the legacy of the US occupation of Afghanistan.”
