Supreme Court Upholds Prayer At Government Meetings
Mark Sherman of the Associated Press reports, “The Supreme Court said Monday that prayers that open town council meetings do not violate the Constitution even if they routinely stress Christianity. The court said in 5-4 decision that the content of the prayers is not significant as long as officials make a good-faith effort at inclusion.” The decision in the case, Town of Greece v. Galloway, reverses a federal appeals court decision that said the town did violate the Constitution by opening meetings almost exclusively with Christian prayers. Earlier this year, R&P talked to one of the judges in that case and ruling, Guido Calabresi. He said then that he “would not be surprised if the Supreme Court reversed us … And that would be too bad.”
