Deadly Terrorist Attack in Southwestern China Blamed on Separatist Muslim Uighurs

At TIME, Hannah Beech reports, “A mass-terrorism spree in a southwestern Chinese city that killed at least 29 people was carried out by assailants from the northwestern region of Xinjiang, which is home to the Uighur ethnic minority, according to China’s official news service.” If Uighurs, who are primarily Muslim, did carry out the attack, the bloodshed would mark a severe radicalization of their resistance movement against decades of institutionalized repression. The Global Times, a Beijing daily, wrote in response to the attack, “A nationwide outrage has been stirred. Justice needs to be done and terrorists should be punished with iron fists.”
