Muslim Women Challenge American Mosques: “Now is the Time”

At NPR, Monique Parsons writes about American Muslim women’s push to make mosques more inclusive towards women. According to a study co-sponsored by the Islamic Society of North America, few American mosques are labeled “women-friendly”; many have “subpar women’s prayer spaces, a lack of leadership roles or little programming relevant to women.” Edina Lekovic, who works for the Muslim Public Affairs Council, said, “Part of what’s at stake is the question of where Muslim women will put their talents. Now, if the mosque is an environment in which they see that the fruits of their labor will be beneficial to the community, they will put their time and energy there.”
