Afghan Provincial Governor Killed in Mosque Attack

The New York Times’ Azam Ahmed reports, “A suicide bomber attacked a mosque in eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday morning, killing the provincial governor as he prepared to give a speech commemorating the start of a major Muslim holiday.” Insurgents targeted Arsala Jamal, a Canadian citizen, after they pledged to destabilize the government before international forces withdraw next year. “This was an act carried out by the enemies of Islam and Afghanistan,” said Haji Abdul Wali Wakil, a member of the provincial council. “Those who carried out this inhumane act do not want Afghans to live in peace.”
