Chicago Muslims Buck North American Scholars, Delay Ramadan A Day

Manya Brachear Pashman of The Chicago Tribune reports that Chicago Muslims delayed the start of Ramadan a day, waiting for visual confirmation of the new moon that signals the start of the holy month. Although North American Muslim authorities declared the start of Ramadan to be Tuesday, many Chicago area Muslims waited until Wednesday to begin their fast. Karen Danielson, who was reproached for eating a hot dog Tuesday by a member of another mosque, joked, “What’s Ramadan without the confusion?”
