Gay Marriage Stirs Rebellion At Synagogue

The New York Times’ Adam Nagourney reports a prominent rabbi announced to his Conservative Jewish congregation that he would be performing same-sex marriages at his Los Angeles synagogue. The announcement has sparked protests within the congregation, especially within its sizable Persian population. “I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time,” Rabbi David Wolpe said. “I was doing it on my internal timetable in the synagogue, which was to try to bring people along slowly because I knew this would be very difficult for many people. I think it’s the most controversial thing I’ve ever done or will do.”
